My issues

I take seriously the title "Representative" and will listen to you and work to solve the issues you care about in our state government. However, I do care deeply about the following issues:

  • The most important role of state government is the welfare and education of all our children. Our neighborhood public schools are a foundation of our communities, and I will work with parents and teachers to make sure our schools have the resources they need to thrive.

  • The last two times our nation has come out of a severe recession, it has benefited mostly those who are already well off. I will work to ensure that the fruits of the recovery from the Covid recession are shared equally with working Utah families.

  • The people of Utah, including a significant majority of voters in House District 9, voted for Medicaid expansion. I agree: we can't expect people to be self-sufficient unless they are healthy enough to work. We need to do more to ensure all our citizens have access to basic health care.

  • As a STEM professional, I understand the importance of science, technology, engineering and math to our state's economic future, and will work with all interested parties to ensure young people entering Utah's workforce are prepared to contribute - including those young people who choose not to pursue a four-year college degree. The key to continued economic growth is for Utah to continue to have the most qualified workers in the nation.

  • I am concerned not only about economic inequality, but about inequality in our criminal justice system. Many of our laws have the effect of making poverty a crime. If we expect those on the lower economic rungs of society to become self-reliant, we have to remove the roadblocks they face from our legal system.

  • Like President Brigham Young, I cherish the wonderful natural beauty of our Zion home, and will support common sense policies to keep our air and water pure and our beautiful public lands pristine.

People often ask: Are you a liberal, moderate or conservative? I don't subscribe to any of those labels. I'm a pragmatist. I'm willing to listen to good ideas, whether they come from the left or the right. Just bring facts and data, and don't try to BS me.
